Paint Week Two

I managed to get a second batch of miniatures painted, and even though it was a smaller grouping progress is progress. So here are five Alaitoc guardians that I got done throughout the week.

When I initially said I would get them done I left myself room to do as little as half or as many as a full squad, this was because I wanted to get a feel for the paint scheme and take it at a good pace. I do really like painting this scheme and have noticed some of the issues there is with painting yellows, such as difficulty to get it to spread evenly. Regardless, I like painting the yellow here far more than I like doing the full white body armour of Biel-Tan Eldar so that is a win for me. I am fairly pleased with how they turned out, only thing I am missing is some Seraphim Sepia shade for the helmets, but I think they are fine without it for now. I was also missing some Hoeth Blue so I subbed in some Baharroth Blue to do a bit of edge highlighting and give some pattern variety among them. In conclusion I was missing a couple things, but made it work with what I had.

For next week I want to finish off the rest of the squad along with the heavy weapons platform, but for them I was toying with the idea of trying out white helmets instead using the same scheme I used for the shuriken catapults above, which was way easier than any schemes of white I have done in the past. I also think I am making progress with how to paint my future Chaos Space Marine force and despite saying I didn’t much want to go with them, I am heavily leaning towards the World Eaters. I was hoping to see some new Emperor’s Children model(s) or atleast a newer upgrade sprue for Noise Marines since they are second in my list of choices, but I am just happy with all the new stuff the Heretic Astartes are getting.

Paint Week 3 Goal: Last half of the guardian squad with weapons platform done in Alaitoc craftworld scheme.

First Painting Goal Done!

So after the first week of trying to make my way through the mountains of miniatures that I own, I was able to paint my Blood Angels Kill Team. The team consists of the following (as everyone can plainly see);

++ Kill Team List (Adeptus Astartes) [150pts] ++

  • Configuration +

List Configuration: Matched Play: Kill Team

  • Commander +

Primaris Lieutenant [50pts]: Melee, Power sword

  • Leader +

Intercessor Sergeant [16pts]: Bolt rifle, Chainsword, Leader

  • Specialists +

Tactical Marine Gunner [16pts]: Plasma gun, Sniper

Reiver Sergeant [18pts]: Combat, Combat knife, Grapnel Launcher, Heavy bolt pistol

Tactical Sergeant [18pts]: Plasma pistol, Power fist, Veteran

  • Non-specialists +

Reiver [16pts]: Combat knife

Tactical Marine Gunner [16pts]: Heavy bolter

++ Total: [150pts] ++

So yeah that’s what the team looks like on paper, and I am happy with how they turned out to be honest. There are a couple of insights that I have from painting these guys up. The first being that I hate painting human skin at all, and I know you are thinking that there isn’t any here, to that I would say you are right. I started doing the head for my plasma gunner that has the breather mask on (pictured below) and it was going well, but when it came to the eyes I started to have some difficulty. Once the eyes came into the equation things got out of hand and I had to remove the head to give the gunner a regular Space Marine helmet. I learned a bit from the attempt to paint the head, but this wasn’t the time for it so another time maybe.

This head right here.

The other thing I managed to learn is that I really enjoy painting red, gold and black together, in particular I found the Reivers to be the most enjoyable. The power sword for the Primaris Lieutenant went well and has a nice blue sheen to it so I am happy with that as well. Overall I am happy with what I got done and how they look, just need to focus on what comes next. Next I want to work on more Eldar Guardians, especially since I have dropped the idea of doing of them as a Biel-Tan scheme. Essentially I found I really hated painting with as much white paint as the Biel-Tan craftworld demanded so I decided to go for a mainly blue scheme and landed on Alaitoc. Majority blue with some yellow, now that I can handle, so I am excited to get started on them. Essentially the goal is this, get acquainted with the new paint scheme and get at least half a squad of Alaitoc Guardians done. Pending speed might be able to get a whole squad done. Well that will be it for this post, until next time everyone!

Paint Week 2 Goal: Half to a Full squad of Guardians pending how well I can make it through them.

The Season of Painting is here!

Spring has finally sprung in the cold northern reaches of Canada where I live, and the time to begin the herculean task of painting everything has come! I recently picked up Shadowspear to add to my collection as I love all the models in it and wanted some Chaos Space Marines for Wrath & Glory stuff that I have planned down the line. I already got the Vanguard Space Marines assembled and I got to say I really love the personality will all the models. The Primaris Lieutenant is my favorite of the bunch honestly (I will probably burn up just saying that,) but I do really like it.

I got them all base coated ready to become Blood Angels, but I began thinking about what to do with the Chaos Space Marine side of the box legion wise. I am having trouble deciding which Legion to go for so here my thoughts on all the ones I was thinking of:

Black Legion: I like the Black and Gold, as well as the lore behind them especially with Abaddon coming out. Though they are pretty basic paint wise, and I already got some black painted models lying around for my Deathwatch and Death Company.

World Eaters: The World Eaters are really cool especially since it would give me reason to get some Berserkers, but I already got some melee oriented angry red dudes.

Emperor’s Children: I like their lore, the fact I could get some Slaanesh daemons to go with them, and the fact that they have a different kind of melee utility as well as Noise Marine spam. However, I am not sure how painting the pink would go as my experiences with lighter paint colors like white aren’t the best.

Iron Warriors: The metallic look is cool, I like their lore and their traits, but painting the hazard stripes scares the hell out of me.

Alpha Legion: I have always loved Alpha Legion, but I have no idea how I would tackle painting these guys. They are really cool on and off the tabletop so they are a strong contender though I will have more than enough blue minis going around what with the Kabal of the Dying Sun and my recent choice to change to an Alaitoc scheme for my Eldar.

I won’t be getting around to painting them for a bit, but once I do I want to have a good idea of what I am going to do. Pending which Legion I do I will pick up a few things to supplement them, but not the equivalent of a 2000 point force. So something I would bust out for 500-1000 point games and for Wrath & Glory. I am curious to see what anybody else thinks would be a cool choice to go with so I will throw up a poll to see what people would go with themselves.

That Chaos Space Marine business aside, I decided I am going to set a paint goal for myself every week and do my best to reach that weekly goal. The goal will vary in size pending amount of work shifts and school work in that given week, but it ensures steady progress. These goal weeks will work from Monday to Sunday, with Sunday being the last day to get it done. I will post every Monday to check in, show my work, and declare my next paint goal. It should be lots of fun and get me off my ass to finally get my pile of unpainted minis looking the way they should. This will ideally get me to progress in the craft and become better at it as time goes on. So starting a little late this week, but I declare that my goal will be to finish painting my 100 point Blood Angels Kill Team complete with Commander. This first weekly goal will feel out what my weekly patience for painting is and help me sort out what is a good amount, so I won’t be terribly upset with myself if I am unable to finish it. That being said I have already got a good start on the Kill Team, so I am feeling optimistic.

To Primaris or to not Primaris?

I have been tinkering with the idea of resurrecting my old Ultramarines army as they were my first love in Warhammer. This all started a few days ago when I was playing some Eternal Crusade as a Ultramarine and somehow it just got me thinking about my old battleforce. So I went to dig them up from my closet and as luck would have it I would eventually finding them after much searching. As I set them on display, it gave me a feeling of sadness that they were basically all but forgotten amidst a bunch of other old stuff.

They were from a time back when I had no idea how to thin paints or even how to use primer. I had been given that Space Marines Battleforce for Christmas by my mother. Getting that battleforce box for Christmas was still one of the best gifts I had ever gotten in my days of youth. It just represented one of the first times I had ever gotten something like that for Christmas, as it seemed to be the first hobby that my parents acknowledged as legitimate (as they never would buy me videogames save for a couple instances.) Just thinking about it brings me back to those days and makes me grin.

I ended up resolving to start gradually building them back up into a force that I could be proud of and do my original battleforce some justice.

So I now stand at a place where I am unsure of what kind of army composition I would go for. Though the most looming question is to make use of the new fancy Primaris marines or not to? Truly the Primaris would represent the greatest of revivals and usher them into 8th, but would it truly do my old force justice?

If you guys have any thoughts to help me decide what direction to take that classic battleforce and company, it would make for a very interesting project.
