Drukhari Kill Team stuff incoming!

So Games Workshop announced the new set of pre-orders for Kill Team, and oh boy am I excited.

First thing of note are the two new Kill Team starter sets that we got coming, that is the Drukhari (Dark Eldar,) and the Deathwatch. A fitting pair of starter sets to come out together, and I must admit I find it surprising that the dark kin get one before the Craftworlders. As cool as the Deathwatch is I am mostly focusing on the Drukhari here, as they are without a doubt one of my favorites. Though it is highly likely that I will be getting a Deathwatch Kill Team in the near future, but I digress. I am pretty stoked to pick up The Slicing Noose box, even though I already have some Wyches that I picked up beforehand, regardless lets take a look at the set:

So like I said it is a Wych Cult theme Kill Team with plenty of melee killing power, with some pistols to add some shooting capability. The Drukhari specific data cards will for sure be useful, having their stratagems on hand in the most convenient way possible. Also get some dank looking Death World scenery that goes perfectly with the next Kill Zone. Then next got a look at the Drukhari specific dice which are picture just below.

I am a sucker for things like this, getting the specific dice for a faction. Just an added bonus to the stuff that has been announced and I know for sure I will be getting this set of dice as well. Then we got the next Kill Zone;

So here we got a really cool looking Death World forest that is a nice break from the urban Kill Zone that came with the starter set. No more roofs and higher floors that people can try to post snipers up on, it is just a straight slog and dirty fight in a crowded environment. They also showed off one of the environmental effects that you can get in the Kill Zone.

This will make things even dicier for troops to traverse the dense forest, and could make some interesting scenarios. Also I feel like Harlequins would thrive in this kind of scenario due to their flip-belts allowing them to move through regular terrain, honestly they would thrive in the forest in general.

Lots of hope for Wrath & Glory

Warhammer 40K is my favorite sci-fi/space fantasy setting of all time, beating out Star Wars (which is a close number 2) and others. The lore is so deep and all the characters/races are just so bad ass. So when I heard of that Fantasy Flight Games had a Tabletop RPG series with the 40K license I had to jump on it. With the numerous modules (by the time I got into it) there were many options to live out the universe; Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Only War, and Black Crusade.

Was really able to sink my teeth into Dark Heresy, Deathwatch and Black Crusade, so that is what my RPG group spent the most time on out of them all. The system that FFG (Fantasy Flight Games) had for these games fell under the d100 system which had percentages for success on rolls. Say you were going to go shoot something and you had a Ballistic Skill of 35, well you had to hit 35 or under to hit. Then once that was done you would roll for damage, there was nothing further to it, you would hit based on your character’s skill or you wouldn’t. That really resonated with me as sometimes in these games, like Dungeons & Dragons for example, had other things to account for like opposing AC which could make all the difference. I very much enjoyed the FFG take on the 40K universe and there were so many places it could go. However, there was one thing that always irked me and that was the fact there were limited (if any) options to play the alien races.

Standard argument people make is that you could home brew your way through that, but that never sat well with me. Insert things like The Spin and that is what home brew is to me, weird overpowered shit that makes zero sense. Can’t take it seriously and neither can my group, there has always been a no home brew allowed thing agreed on by us all. It just feels so artificial and just not right at all, just a weird feeling overall. Not that I feel there is anything wrong with anyone doing this, if you like to home brew things all the power to you.

 

So where this leaves me is the point where the contract between FFG and Games Workshop ran out so no more 40K games by them, which is really too bad. The new game that will be taking over is called Wrath & Glory, as taken on by Ulisses (props for the name.) There isn’t much known about it at this point other than they plan to focus on archetypes, will be using a d6 system for roles and the tiers of power thing (which I will touch on shortly). The d6 is ok in my opinion, and has seen use in things like Shadowrun so it works for some bigger known games. The biggest thing I have hope for in Wrath and Glory is to be able to get those systems built in to play things like Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau, Orks, or even Neurons (somehow.) This would be really awesome and put the full scope of the world to use. Because personally even though the Imperium and the forces of Chaos are sweet, would be cool to see some different stuff take center stage. Those are my hopes for Wrath & Glory. In the latest newsletter by Ulisses they talk about tiers of power for characters with the Eldar Warlock being an example of a Tier 3 power character. So with them considering the different tiers of power it seems like they are giving great thought to the 40K universe as a whole and ways to balance those characters out. I have great hope for Wrath & Glory being awesome and using the other races as they speak of the other race options often enough in the newsletters.

 

TLDR; FFG had a great rpg, so Wrath and Glory will ideally be a good follow up. Just needs to put the d6 system to good use and have some focus/options on the races outside of mankind. Hope it is good.

 

Also check out the FFG games before it is too late and they go outta print. Having the physical copies is always best (in my opinion) and PDFs just slow things down at the table.

Only War

Ever want to be Imperial Guardsmen and be expendable as all hell? Here you go this one is for you. Can create a regiment for yourselves, have an awesome theme going for your characters and ultimately die for the God Emperor of mankind. Who knows maybe you will be that one awesome guy who survives it all?

Dark Heresy 2nd Edition

The one that started it all, has solid character creation rules and you get to be above the common folk of the Imperium. Working for the Inquisition you get to do all sorts of fun things and be the ultimate hunters of witches/aliens/demons.

Rogue Trader

Finally we have here Rogue Trader; flying around through space to discover new planets, trade routes and ultimately earn your fortune. Be the ultimate space faring Han Solo type and see all that there is to see.
